Tottori (鳥取) is famously the least-populated prefecture in Japan but don't let that fool you into thinking there is nothing to see here! Tottori is a laid back area with lots of natural beauty and is easily reachable by highway bus from Osaka.

The bus terminal is directly across from the train station where you can find a tourist center with lots of brochures.

Things to See

  • Sand Dunes
Perhaps the most famous site in Tottori is the large sand dunes bordering the Sea of Japan. Easily accessible by local bus from Tottori Station, kick off your shoes and enjoy the feel of sand between your toes! Plan your day carefully because the city bus ends its service early (4:00 ~ 5:00pm), taxis are on hand if you decide to stick around for photos of the sunset on the dunes.

Hiking

Tottori also boasts many nice hiking trails just outside of the city.

Onsens

Long ago a magic white rabbit showed the people of Tottori the natural springs in the area and people are still grateful! Check out the tourist center in Tottori Station for maps to the many, many onsens in the area, perfect for after a days hiking!
